Waterford City is the principal City in the South East of Ireland and has been designated as a Gateway City to the Region under the Government's National Spatial Strategy for Ireland . The National Spatial Strategy prioritises funding to Gateway Cities in Ireland to provide balanced strategic development within Ireland and to assist with Waterford City 's role as an economic driver of growth in the Region.
