Legislation

When starting a business, there is a variety of legislation that may be relevant to your company. For example, if you decide to establish a limited company you will be required under company law to register your company with the Companies Registration Office and file the relevant paperwork.

If you intend to employ staff, there is a wide range of employment legislation that you will need to be aware of and comply with, for example in relation to minimum wage, working hours and break entitlements, protective leave, equality and health & safety.

Some industries will also have their own specific legislation that should be complied with. Food manufacturing companies should seek guidance from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland who can provide guidance on your particular industry. Retailers should be fully aware of the provisions of the Sale of Goods & Supply of Services Act which is designed to protect consumer rights. If you have created intellectual property, you should be aware of copyright and patent laws which are there to protect your ideas from being exploited.
